Indonesia’s Military Overhauls Structure with New Units and Leadership Changes

INDONESIA PEMBAHARUAN, JAKARTA - Indonesia’s military, known as Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI), has embarked on a significant organizational overhaul aimed at enhancing its operational capabilities and modernizing its leadership framework.

On Monday (25 August 2025), General Agus Subiyanto, Commander of the TNI, formally inaugurated two new military units: the Logistics Agency (Balog TNI) and the Personnel Administration Center (Pusminpers TNI). At the same time, the longstanding Supply Agency (Babek TNI) was officially disbanded. This move signals a strategic shift towards more streamlined and adaptive defense structures.

Responding to Complex Security Challenges

The restructuring comes amid rising geopolitical tensions in Southeast Asia, where Indonesia is increasingly positioning itself as a regional security actor. The formation of new units reflects the military’s efforts to bolster logistics and human resources management—critical components in maintaining operational readiness.

In his address at the ceremony held at the TNI headquarters in East Jakarta, General Agus emphasized the importance of adaptability and responsiveness in facing future threats.

“Our military must evolve continuously to meet the complex demands of modern security,” he said. “This organizational change strengthens our foundation for a professional and modern TNI.”

Leadership Renewal and Promotion

Alongside structural changes, the military has seen a wide-ranging reshuffle of senior officers, with 31 promotions across the Army, Navy, and Air Force branches. These appointments represent a generational renewal in TNI’s leadership, aimed at injecting fresh perspectives and renewed vigor into the institution.

Notable appointments include Laksda TNI Hersan as Inspector General and Brigjen TNI Freddy Ardianzah as Head of the TNI Information Center, among others. These moves underscore a commitment to integrating operational efficiency with strategic vision.

A Step Towards Modernization

Indonesia’s military reform reflects broader efforts to modernize its defense forces amid evolving regional security landscapes. As the archipelago nation confronts challenges ranging from maritime disputes to emerging security threats, the TNI’s internal transformation seeks to ensure it remains agile and capable.

Experts suggest that such changes are not merely administrative but have significant implications for Indonesia’s defense posture and its role on the regional stage.

This restructuring may also have ripple effects on civil-military relations and Indonesia’s broader national security policies. As the country continues to assert its sovereignty and safeguard its interests, the TNI’s renewed structure will be pivotal.
